Maldives Police Service will take legal action against individuals who act against the moral and social norms of the country while in the Maldives.

Police said in a statement that “some foreigners and tourists have been observed behaving indecently in the streets and public places of gathering in a manner that violates the social norms and the public decorum.” Police said such behavior could disturb public order and violate Islamic customs and traditions of the Maldives.

Measures under the Law No. 2010/11, the law banning acts against public social norms, will be taken to prevent such behavior, police said. “All citizens of Maldives have a duty to respect the culture and moral standards of the country,” they said.

The police also said parties bringing foreigners must ensure those under their care act in accordance with social norms. Visitors are advised to wear appropriate clothing in public places on inhabited islands other than resorts and tourist areas. Police have appealed to those working in the tourism sector to be alert to this.

Police reiterated their warnings that legal action will be taken, without further consideration, against anyone who violates these rules and the manners and morals of society.
