The Hulhumalé Development Corporation (HDC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health has launched a program to improve the well-being of the elderly people in Hulhumalé and to strengthen their social connections.
The program was launched by Minister of Health, Welfare and Family Geela Ali yesterday morning during activities held at Hulhumale Central Park to mark the day.
It aims to reduce the isolation many older people feel from remaining at home and being cut off from community life, and to create a joyful and active environment for them.
Older people who would like to take part can sign up and join the sessions free of charge.
Three days a week, light exercises suitable to the age of the older people will be held, such as walking, stretching and breathing exercises. There will also be a special evening gathering once a week or once every two weeks for older people under the name “Golden Hour”.
The program also provides for a monthly trip to a nearby island or other suitable place so that older people can spend time in pleasant surroundings, medical check-ups, such as blood pressure screening, once every quarter and activities through which children and young people can share cultural knowledge with older people.
Transport will be provided for participants. First aid services will be available during sessions, drinking water and rest facilities will be available. Special attention will be given to safety and health of participants.
This program is being carried out in collaboration with HDC, the Ministry of Health, Hulhumalé Hospital, the police, Physio Solutions, the Pension Office, MTCC, Ureedhoo, and several NGOs.
The HDC hopes the program will improve the physical and mental health of the elderly and help make Hulhumalé a friendly and happy community for all ages.
